Student Anxiety and the College Admission Testing Process: Advice for Students and Parents

College admission testing can be a long and often stressful process for many students and their families. To avoid unneeded stress:

  • Planning Your Timeline: By planning out the step-by-step and year-by-year timeline, student anxiety seems to lessen.
  • Being Prepared vs. Lack of Preparation: Given the above, all students need to have a strong grasp of what the formats of the tests involve.  That is essential for this type of standardized testing that puts a large emphasis on having a limited time frame.  Therefore, knowing what to expect time-wise and what is included on the test is paramount.
  • College Requirements for standardized tests:  How do colleges interpret and use these scores?:One way for students and parents to lessen their anxiety is to understand how colleges use the test scores in their admission process.
  • Health:  Student achievement is directly related to one’s health.
The number one piece of advice I give a student the day before the SAT is to have a good sleep and a good breakfast, the rest will be fine.  A little positivity never hurts, does it?
