Now days with lower addmission rates into top tier colleges than ever before, many kids go to plan B. Even after all the years of work to build a solid looking application, it doesn't count for anything now. It is even said that a kid that dropped out, or just played video games, or didn't have a single honors class have nothing to worry about. Transfering from a community colllege to a 4-year school could be your best friend.
