SARASOTA, Fla. (AP) -- Prosecutors say a Florida teen accused of killing two British tourists told a friend that he saw the victims walking in his neighborhood and that he intended to rob them.
Prosecutors said Thursday in their opening statements that the men didn't have money, so 17-year-old Shawn Tyson shot them instead. Tyson is charged with two counts of first-degree murder.
Opening statements in the trial began Thursday morning.
Authorities say Tyson shot and killed 24-year-old James Kouzaris and 25-year-old James Cooper last April. If convicted, Tyson faces life in prison. He cannot face the death penalty because he is 17.
Defense attorney Carolyn Schlemmer said during her opening statement that there is nothing to tie Tyson to the shootings and that witnesses testifying against him are unreliable. The weapon used to kill the two men was never found.
