Personal Finance Topic #262 – Job Loss and Retirement – Part 4

It is better to wait to receive Social Security benefit until Full Retirement Age or later if you contributed more into Social Security System. An exception to this would be if you have a shorter lifespan. A spouse who recieves little income or none should start recieving it at 62. At age 62 it's 1,500, 66 is 2,000 plus cost of living, and at 70 is 2,640 plus cost of living. In 2012 if you are younger than retirement age and make more than $ 14,640 you get $1 deducted for every $2 on this. If you reach Full Retirment Age during 2012 you get $1 for every $3 deducted if you make over $38,880 until you reach that age. After reaching it, nothing gets deducted. A lump sum distribution can bump you into higher tax brackets. Taking out a minimum distribution amount from the Traditional IRA starting at 71.

Are car loans, college loans so different?

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/college-inc/post/are-car-loans-college-loans-so-different/2012/02/28/gIQAZxN4fR_blog.html

The average loan is $28,000 for a car, also lenders average 1.7 million new auto loans every month. Now college debt is about the debt of a new car after graduation. Although a 4-year degree averages $240,000 to $1,090,000 more lifetime earnings. As a car depreciates in value over time, the degree gains momentum in salary over time.

Teens and Money

http://www.foxbusiness.com/personal-finance/2012/02/24/teens-and-money/

Teens are prone to making those financial mistakes. Uh oh.

“High school seniors have little knowledge of money management, savings, investments, income and spending,” the UC system reported. “A vast majority of students 16 to 22 have never taken a class in personal finance, with two-thirds admitting they could benefit from more money management lessons. Alarmingly, 9% were rolling over credit card debt each month.”

Classes like ours are being proposed as "required". Good thinking.

The Lorax Movie

I know this doesn't have to do with finance but I found it Interesting.

President Obama and the senate were thinking about not showing the new movie. The Lorax. They said the movies goal was to manipulate young minds to not follow their government.

The producer and director reassured the government that that wasn;t the case. And, it was a movie about a bussiness man who just gets greedy, and destroys the environment.

Dr. Suess even knew this would happen and when his book was published he even said this is not a book, that is throughing down the government. Instead it is about greed and how we must watch are resource comsumption.

Teens and money

http://www.foxbusiness.com/personal-finance/2012/02/24/teens-and-money/

when given a national standardized money management test, high school seniors tallied an average grade of 48.3%. 16 to 22 have never taken a class in personal finance... American teens are spending at about a $179 billion a year. So its saying that we need more classes to help kids with this so they can be productive with there money.

Personal Finance: Beware of phony debt collectors

These calls are based in southern California and are from call centers in India. They are asking for payment on delinqent loans. They act as attorneys or law enforcement and threaten lawsuits or arrests. In 8.5 million calls tracked over 4 months in late 2010, they got more than $5 million dollars. They were going by American Credit Crunchers LLC and Ebeeze LLC which are now shut down because of this.

Budget means parents more responsible for teen driver training

Car accidents are the leading cause of death for teens in Washington. At the same time, fewer high schools are offering drivers education because of budget cuts.

Writers notice that 6 hours of driving with an instructor is not enough to get them the training that they need to get on the road.

I strongly disagree. Before they made the laws of driving with an instructor, kids learned to drive from their parents. Parents want to have these kids, or have made the mistake of having them, so they should be responsible for teaching them the ways.

My dad taught me to drive, and I drive just fine.

Foster care: Corbett's plan would be a win-win situation

Governer Tom Corbett has proposed that older teens get foster care support until they are 21, rather than 17 like it is now. This will help the kids who "age out" of foster care have more stability finanically. Right now, only foster kids who finish high school, enroll in college, or need medical care get support until 21 but with the governer's new plan, the kids who go to a trade school or straight into the work force can have other financial support too. The extra funding would also encourage more families to adopt and the foster children can have the family's support longer. According to the Juvenile Law Center and Pennsylvania Partners for Children, this could also save the state money. Young foster women are 2 and a 1/2 times more likely to become pregnant by 19 than other young women, so having continued support from 17-21 might lower that as well.

PERSONAL FINANCE: Do Women Make Better Investors?

Barbara Walker-Green says that women make better investors than males due to the way they aproach investments. She says, "We tend to be more emotional about what is going on in the market versus more aggressive like men are, our investments are a lot more conservative, and we look at the emotional side of investing in terms of what is going to be left for our loved ones." These are the reasons she gave for believing women do better.

Early teen years a prime time for learning financial sense

“Because of brain plasticity, the early teen years are a crucial time to learn financial lessons. The pathways in the frontal lobes are in the process of being rewired and parents can influence how new circuits form.”

When 14 year old Lukas wanted a $300 hockey stick and his dad had a $100 budget in mind, they had to work out a deal. His dad would pay the $100 and Lukas would work off the other $200.
This is the prime example of learning something early, they say that when you are set with an obstacle like this in your teen years you understand finance better in your adult years due to certain things in the brain.

I find it super interesting that I have been learning finance since I was 10 years old, having to do chores for the things I want and not the thing that I need.

Trillion is the new billion in today's Washington budgeting

A trillion is a thousand times more than a billion and those are the numbers Washington is now. It would take an average income household making $50,000/year 20 billion years to pay off a trillion, yet the deficits, federal budget, and national debt are all in the trillions now. A million millions is a trillion and this article is talking about how much money people are talking nowadays and just how MUCH it all has become, because before billion was the big number, but now people have even bypassed that.

Bank of America, Ally Financial Inc, Citigroup Inc, J.P. Morgan Chase, and Wells Fargo & CO, are the banks doing this. If you win your case and get your papers signed in 2012, you won't have income tax on it. $17 Billion was set aside for this, but the home owners lose is up to $700 Billion. Home owners making payments bigger than needed can't do this, but can try to refinance into a new one. If you've already forclosed, you can contact the state attorney general's office and request being put on the list for receaving money. Some states have more money than others on this.

Families are concerned that colleges rely too heavily on ACT and SAT scores to admit a student, but colleges are worried that families use a college's SAT and ACT scores too much to judge the worth of the school. It's a catch twenty-two. But there is more emphasis placed on academic grades overall rather than just the standardized tests and the colleges wish that families would evalute any school based on their schools in context of other quaility features. Numbers should only be used to establish a neighborhood of colleges for a students to apply to where they will fit in best.

Last year these civil groups received $1.8 trillion from the government. I can only hope that these new measures are seeking to cut that amount and will give the money to only deserving groups.

She tries to "beat last month's scores" and lower her utility bill a little bit more than she had last month, use a product longer than she had before, etc. She thought living frugally was really difficult until she used this mindset and now she takes joy and pride in it. She also competes against other people that she finds on finance and frugality message boards.

The budget for the movie was a reported $14-15 million, when compared to Paranormal Activity that was shot for $15,000 and Cloverfield which was shot for $25 million but had J.J. Abrams attached. The budget was some what reasonable, but Liz Johnstone claims that it was a little much for the quality of film that was produced. The quality was just not there, she basically says.

A Radical Idea to Combat the Cost of College

http://moneyland.time.com/2012/02/02/a-radical-idea-to-combat-the-rising-cost-of-college/?iid=pf-main-lede
Instead of raising tuition, Fix UC suggests getting rid of it altogether. Under the proposal, in-state students would pay nothing upfront to attend any University of California campus. But upon gaining employment after graduation, they would be required to pay back 5% of their income for 20 years.
The students thought through various contingencies and incentives schemes, as well. If a graduate is unemployed for a period of time, his or her repayment total would adjust accordingly. If graduates stay in California, they would pay half a percent less because they would be contributing to the local tax base. Further, those graduates who go into California’s public sector, government workers, teachers, etc., would have an additional percent taken off their bill. And, because out-of-state and international students pay more to attend UC schools, they would pay back 6% of their income to the school.

Fix UC says is $52,936, but that difference paid over 20 years is the equivalent of paying an interest rate of less than 1%. That’s extremely low, as student loans today carry interest rates that range from 6% to 8%.

As costs continue to rise, paying for college gets tougher for many students

A student at UW-Madison is having a really difficult time at paying tuition. She's double majoring and working 30 some hours a week and her scholarship just ran out because she has to go an extra year. Thanks to inflation and less funding for state schools, tuition is rising. Colleges are trying to replace the revenue they used to get from states with revenue from students and a lot of the students are struggling. State funding for education in Wisconson dropped 13.3% this year. Their drop was one of the highest in the nation. A lot of students are graduating with thousands in debt, but advisors are still saying going to college is worth the hefty price tag and thousands in debt because it will pay off later for most kids.

If You Love The Stock Market, You’ll Root For The Giants On Sunday.

Although there's no real reason behind it, in years when a team from the pre-expansion NFL (in this year's Superbowl, the New York Giants) wins, the stock market ends the year higher 80% of the time. Although this is no true economic indicator, it does have a small amount of intrigue associated with it just because people love weird stats. Another strange number is that when a team has won before (as both teams have), the stocks gain on average 13% by the end of the year, as opposed to only 5% after a non-returning champion wins.
