Student Anxiety and the College Admission Testing Process: Advice for Students and Parents

College admission testing can be a long and often stressful process for many students and their families. To avoid unneeded stress:

  • Planning Your Timeline: By planning out the step-by-step and year-by-year timeline, student anxiety seems to lessen.
  • Being Prepared vs. Lack of Preparation: Given the above, all students need to have a strong grasp of what the formats of the tests involve.  That is essential for this type of standardized testing that puts a large emphasis on having a limited time frame.  Therefore, knowing what to expect time-wise and what is included on the test is paramount.
  • College Requirements for standardized tests:  How do colleges interpret and use these scores?:One way for students and parents to lessen their anxiety is to understand how colleges use the test scores in their admission process.
  • Health:  Student achievement is directly related to one’s health.
The number one piece of advice I give a student the day before the SAT is to have a good sleep and a good breakfast, the rest will be fine.  A little positivity never hurts, does it?

4 Things Parents Should Know Before Paying for College

http://www.investorideas.com/news/2013/main/05141.asp

One year of College can cost  From $20,000 to $65,000 a year
Along with worrying about rising tuition prices, parents also fear for their own futures if their retirement savings are drained by children's college cost. Only 14 percent, for example, are very confident they'll have the money to live comfortably in retirement.
  • The ROI of a college education:  College graduates earn 84 percent than those with only a high school diploma.
  • Move retirement assets to qualify for grants: Most parents know about the 529 savings account, but that's not necessarily the best or only option. Reallocating your retirement assets, such as 401(k)s, can better position a child to qualify for grants and scholarships.
  • Know your student's strengths and weaknesses: Assessment might include a personality profile and a detailed search for a future career. Also think about a more nuts-and-bolts approach, including scholarship eligibility, SAT and ACT prep courses, review of admissions essays and an in-depth analysis of chances for enrollment in a student's top four choices of colleges.
  • Make a checklist of financial aid forms: Make a checklist with a timeline and notable deadlines. Be ready to troubleshoot the "alphabet soup" of data forms: FAFSA – Free Application For Federal Student Aid; CSS profile – College Scholarship Service; SAR – Student Aid Report; and more.

Home buying can hurt your credit- if you're not careful. There are 4 finanical obsticales that can hurt your creadit. The first one is taking to long to shop for a mortgage if it takes over the 14-45 day window shop for an interest rate that isn't too high. The second one is keeping up with your mortgage payments because of you get behind, it will affect your credit score. The third one is forgetting to let everyone know you moved, because if creditors are sending bills to the wrong address, you may get behind on payments. The last one is just the high cost of moving day. It will require a lot of money for bills and utilities, which might make people go over their budget.

Stock market rises back into record territory

Another closely watched stock market indicator has also been on a tear: transportation stocks. The Dow Transport average rose 1.9 percent Tuesday and is up 21.8 percent this year, far more than other major indexes. Investors often see these stocks as an indication of where the economy is going. When companies make and ship more goods, the thinking goes, truckers, airlines and railways have more business.

YouTube Is Said to Plan a Subscription Option

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/05/07/business/media/youtube-said-to-be-planning-a-subscription-option.html?ref=business&_r=0

This week YouTube will announce a plan to let some video makers charge a monthly subscription to their channels. There will be paid channels for children’s programming, entertainment, music and many other topic areas, according to people with knowledge of the plan. YouTube not to comment publicly yet. Some of the channels — there will be several dozen at the outset — will cost as little as $1.99 a month.

I don't know if this is a good idea or not. I really believe that the people who regularly post videos on to YouTube should get compensation for it (if not already) because of their dedication and ability to post videos often. But, then I also believe that YouTube has been an outlet for many people to use on a regular basis and a change this big could possibly negatively affect the usage of the site.

Students who attend fee-charging schools are far more likely to go directly to third-level education, according to new data compiled by the Department of Education.
A report tracking school leavers from three years ago has found that 66% of students from the fee-charging sector were in third-level education one year later.

Billionaire's son pushes for campaign-finance overhaul

http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2013/05/01/soros-new-york-campaign-finance-2014/2127707/

WASHINGTON – Jonathan Soros thinks a push by the New York Legislature to tighten the state's campaign-finance laws could give the issue national momentum if it's successful.
And the Harvard-educated lawyer, son of billionaire hedge-fund investor George Soros, has a game plan to make it happen.
The super PAC that Soros co-founded in April last year, Friends of Democracy, plans to double the number of House races — from eight in 2012 to 16 in 2014 — in which it will spend money backing candidates who support stricter campaign-finance laws. And it hopes to double the amount it raises, from $2.5 million last year to $5 million for the 2014 elections.
Soros, along with other groups pushing for more transparency and integrity in government, is spending money on advertising and advocacy in New York, where he's supporting Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo's ramped-up efforts to enact legislation that would provide public matching funds for campaign contributions from small donors.

Personal Finance For Young Professionals

http://www.forbes.com/sites/quora/2013/05/01/personal-finance-for-young-professionals/

This discusses how its important to start thinking sbout your personal finance now. For example, to start thinking about your retirement now, so you can start to save accordingly. It lists the things you need to think about :
Compounding
401k vs IRA
Traditional vs Roth
The importance of starting early to save for retirement
General Savings
Investing
My Personal Finance

  1. Start saving early for retirement. The earlier you start, the less amount (percentage wise) of your salary you have to save each year in order to live comfortably during retirement.
  2. Contribute to your company’s 401k if they match, else open up an IRA. Always max these accounts out every year to the cap. Did I mention start early? Like right now?
  3. Aim for 10-15% of your income going to retirement.
  4. Only put 3-6 months worth of living expenses in your bank’s savings account, the interest rate is usually abysmal and probably does not even beat inflation. Use it as an emergency fund for when you need money ASAP.
  5. For the rest of your money, put them in bonds and mutual funds. Follow the bonds/mutual funds allocation formula in the “Investing” section above.
  6. Retire like a boss.

Still, its average credit score of 787 is impressive, and the city owes it in part to a low unemployment rate of 6.9 percent, and a median family income of $82,700. On the negative side, it had 786 foreclosures.

Debt: $23,533
Number of Late Payments: 0.27
% Credit Available: 75.90
Number of Open Credit Cards: 1.79

Madison, Wis., has fallen one spot to number 3, but like Cedar Rapids, the city is still in good standing despite the slippage. It has a lower-than-average unemployment rate at 6 percent, a higher-than-average median family income of $81,800 and a high percentage of available credit.

4. Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Credit Score: 781
Debt: $23,628
Number of Late Payments: 0.32
% Credit Available: 76.57
Number of Open Credit Cards: 1.82

Like most of the cities on this list, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, has fallen one spot since the previous year. Still, number 4 isn’t a bad place to be. Its high placement is due in part to a high percentage of available credit and a low unemployment rate of 6 percent.

5. San Francisco

Credit Score: 781
Debt: $23,973
Number of Late Payments: 0.30
% Credit Available: 72.83
Number of Open Credit Cards: 2.02

At number 5, San Francisco is the only city on this list to retain its ranking from the previous year. Its residents have a relatively high number of open credit cards and a relatively low percentage of available credit. At the time of the survey, the city had a 10 percent unemployment rate, higher than the national average of 9.2 percent. But at $101,600, San Francisco is the only city on this list with a six-figure median family income, which helps it to retain its foothold.

Is a mortgage a smart way to pay for college?

http://www.usatoday.com/story/money/personalfinance/2013/04/13/paying-for-college-mortgage/2071033/

I am not sure taking out a home loan to pay for your kids college education is the best decision, either. You would be putting your home at risk, which isn't a good idea. And never let the tax benefits influence your financial decision. You can only deduct the interest on your mortgage if you are itemizing your deductions, and even then you would only benefit from the amount of deductions that are greater than the standard deduction ($11,900 for 2013). This means if you take out a mortgage and then have $13,000 of itemized deductions, you really only benefit from a $1,100 deduction. Multiply this deduction by your tax rate to get the actual tax benefit, and you will find that it really isn't all that much

Personal Finance: Learn to be a 'squeaky wheel' Read more here: http://www.sacbee.com/2013/04/28/5375422/learn-to-be-a-squeaky-wheel.html#storylink=cpy

http://www.sacbee.com/2013/04/28/5375422/learn-to-be-a-squeaky-wheel.html

Inevitably something goes wrong with something you've bought. What do you do?Too many of us just give up or don't bother trying to get the store or company to resolve the problem. We live in a buck-up-and-take-it society, we're not going to plead for anything; we're just going to take it. We have a subconscious feeling that when we speak out, we're viewed as a complainer. Not all consumers are treated equally. If you're persistent and know how to complain effectively, you're more likely to get a remedy.Companies have two types of responses to complaining customers: those who get the quick brush-off and the "squeaky wheels" who merit some attention.
There's an art to getting good customer service. Here's how:

Be nice

If you start off angry or arrogant, you'll likely get shut down quickly.

Be armed

Don't pick up the phone, go online or write a letter until you have essential details: serial numbers, date of purchase, warranty information, etc. If you're shuffling papers or unsure of details or vague about what you want, you're not going to sound like someone who should be listened to.

Don't stop at "No"

Many consumers give up too easily, especially when they encounter a brusque or unhelpful customer service rep. "You need to appeal any decision you get … Companies are not in business to lose customers."

Put it in writing

Often, the most effective way to lodge a complaint is to write a letter.

Start local

Begin with the store where you bought the item.

Fill out the card

Consumer Reports says you should always fill out the paper warranty card that comes with most major purchases. Even though it's not required to activate the warranty.

Warranty or not

Even if your warranty has expired, it doesn't mean there's no point in trying. Giorgianni says the legal concept of "implied warranty" means there's a reasonable expectation that a product should be workable and usable.

Tweet it; post it

Social media can be an ally, as well. Many companies have Facebook pages where you can post your beef on a message board. The sites are monitored and you'll often get a reply from a company rep. Same with message boards on the company's website.
Ultimately, being a squeaky wheel means "not being afraid to ask," said Papantoniadis. "You have to go in with the idea that you don't expect anything. And the worst they can say is 'No.' "

If you don't get a satisfactory answer, "go up the food chain," he advises. Ask to speak to a supervisor or manager. If necessary, take it to the CEO's office.

Length of car loans is increasing

As car prices continue to rise, some auto loan terms have lengthened to a whopping 96 months, or eight years. It's an attempt to make monthly payments more affordable for consumers, but financial experts say such lengthy auto loans can be a bad idea. The average price of a new automobile is $31,200, says Kelley Blue Book. To make that more palatable for consumers, lenders are allowing them to spread payments over more years. In March, nearly one-third of auto loans were for 72 months or longer, a record high, according to J.D. Power and Associates."It used to be that 36 months was considered a standard loan," said Mike Sante, managing editor of Interet.com. Because vehicles last longer today, consumers might justify taking a longer loan. The average age of a vehicle today is 11.

GBC College Knowledge: The Cost of College — and paying for it

http://elkodaily.com/lifestyles/gbc-college-knowledge-the-cost-of-college-and-paying-for/article_c56238c4-a6f0-11e2-bb60-001a4bcf887a.html

There are startling differences ranging from $4,500 to $45,000/year for tuition and fees alone. Books, transportation and living expenses (often another $10,000 to $15,000) will add to the yearly cost of a college education. As such, for a full-time student the cost of attendance can easily range from $15,000 to $60,000 per year.

• Pay As You Go (working your way through college) - allows a person to earn a degree without incurring any college-related debt.

• Using Deferred Payment Plans Available Through Most Colleges - allow a semester’s worth of tuition to be paid in several equal installments.
• Scholarships - Colleges and universities typically have a wide range of both merit and need based scholarships ranging in size from $250 to several thousand dollars.
• Grants (both state and federal) - The primary difference between a grant and a loan is that money received as a grant does not need to be paid back; the grant is a gift of sorts.
• Work Study - Work study is a federal grant program that allocates dollars to colleges for use in employing students with financial need at the college.
• Employer Tuition Reimbursement Programs - Many employers offer their employees a tuition reimbursement program as part of their fringe benefits package.
• Guaranteed Federal Loans - These types of loans must be repaid after one completes or stops attending school in 10 to 25 years depending upon the type of loan.
• Alternative Student Loans (Private or Bank Loans) - Some families and individuals prefer to work with their local lending agency and independently borrow the funds necessary to pay for college.
• Credit Cards - With interest rates running from 10-24 percent per year, paying for college with a credit card can be the most expensive method of financing a college education unless one has the means to pay the balance due in full each month
• The FAFSA - Free Application for Federal Student Aid
