Student Anxiety and the College Admission Testing Process: Advice for Students and Parents
College admission testing can be a long and often stressful process for many students and their families. To avoid unneeded stress:
- Planning Your Timeline: By planning out the step-by-step and year-by-year timeline, student anxiety seems to lessen.
- Being Prepared vs. Lack of Preparation: Given the above, all students need to have a strong grasp of what the formats of the tests involve. That is essential for this type of standardized testing that puts a large emphasis on having a limited time frame. Therefore, knowing what to expect time-wise and what is included on the test is paramount.
- College Requirements for standardized tests: How do colleges interpret and use these scores?:One way for students and parents to lessen their anxiety is to understand how colleges use the test scores in their admission process.
- Health: Student achievement is directly related to one’s health.
The number one piece of advice I give a student the day before the SAT is to have a good sleep and a good breakfast, the rest will be fine. A little positivity never hurts, does it?

Driving In Detroit? Expect To Pay Highest Auto Insurance In Country
they say a savings of $125 per vehicle for one year of auto insurance is not enough when you consider the average cost of car insurance is five thousand dollars in Detroit. Detroit’s average premium of five thousand dollars is the nation’s most expensive and is some twelve hundred dollars higher than second place Philadelphia. Often, the cost of insurance exceeds the cost of the vehicle. Presently, a driver with a DUI and a good credit score gets a better rate than a laid off factory worker with a challenged credit score, who has never had a ticket

One year of College can cost From $20,000 to $65,000 a year

- The ROI of a college education: College graduates earn 84 percent than those with only a high school diploma.
- Move retirement assets to qualify for grants: Most parents know about the 529 savings account, but that's not necessarily the best or only option. Reallocating your retirement assets, such as 401(k)s, can better position a child to qualify for grants and scholarships.
- Know your student's strengths and weaknesses: Assessment might include a personality profile and a detailed search for a future career. Also think about a more nuts-and-bolts approach, including scholarship eligibility, SAT and ACT prep courses, review of admissions essays and an in-depth analysis of chances for enrollment in a student's top four choices of colleges.
- Make a checklist of financial aid forms: Make a checklist with a timeline and notable deadlines. Be ready to troubleshoot the "alphabet soup" of data forms: FAFSA – Free Application For Federal Student Aid; CSS profile – College Scholarship Service; SAR – Student Aid Report; and more.

The second one is keeping up with your mortgage payments because of you get behind, it will affect your credit score. Stock market rises back into record territory
Another closely watched stock market indicator has also been on a tear: transportation stocks. The Dow Transport average rose 1.9 percent Tuesday and is up 21.8 percent this year, far more than other major indexes. Investors often see these stocks as an indication of where the economy is going. When companies make and ship more goods, the thinking goes, truckers, airlines and railways have more business.
The market rose from the opening of trading and climbed steadily throughout the day. The Dow rose 123.57 points, or 0.8 percent, to 15,215.25. The S&P 500 index rose 16.57 points, or 1 percent, to 1,650.34. Both are at all-time highs.
The Dow has gained for 18 straight Tuesdays. The only day with a longer streak of consecutive gains is Wednesday, with 24 back in 1968, according to Schaeffer's Investment Research.

YouTube Is Said to Plan a Subscription Option
http://www.nytimes.com/2013/05/07/business/media/youtube-said-to-be-planning-a-subscription-option.html?ref=business&_r=0
This week YouTube will announce a plan to let some video makers charge a monthly subscription to their channels. There will be paid channels for children’s programming, entertainment, music and many other topic areas, according to people with knowledge of the plan. YouTube not to comment publicly yet. Some of the channels — there will be several dozen at the outset — will cost as little as $1.99 a month.
I don't know if this is a good idea or not. I really believe that the people who regularly post videos on to YouTube should get compensation for it (if not already) because of their dedication and ability to post videos often. But, then I also believe that YouTube has been an outlet for many people to use on a regular basis and a change this big could possibly negatively affect the usage of the site.

The Dolphins stadium will not be renovated!
The bill, which was passed by the Florida Senate, wasn't brought to a vote by House speaker Will Weatherford prior to the end of the legislative session, which means Miami-Dade County residents will not have a chance to vote on the funding referendum.
The Dolphins want to renovate Sun Life, and were hoping to fund part of the project by lifting the hotel bed tax cap from six to seven percent. The team was also hoping to secure roughly $90 million in sales tax rebates over the next 30 years. However, without public funding, the $400 million project has been scuttled.

Fee-paying secondary students more likely to go directly to college
http://www.rte.ie/news/2013/0507/390699-fee-charging-schools-college/
Students who attend fee-charging schools are far more likely to go directly to third-level education, according to new data compiled by the Department of Education.
A report tracking school leavers from three years ago has found that 66% of students from the fee-charging sector were in third-level education one year later.
This is compared to 42% of students from non fee-charging post primary schools.
This is the first time the Department of Education has published reports based on the information it and other agencies gather, and aimed at finding out what school leavers do.
Of those who completed their Leaving Certificate in 2010, more than half went on directly to higher and under a third to further education.
There was evidence of 7% signing on for social welfare, and 10% working. The figures showed 66% of students from fee-charging schools went straight to third-level.
That is compared to 47% of students in ordinary secondary schools, between 42% and 38% in comprehensive and community schools, and 34% in the VEC sector.
The data found students in all-Irish schools 14% more likely to be in college one year later.

Billionaire's son pushes for campaign-finance overhaul
http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2013/05/01/soros-new-york-campaign-finance-2014/2127707/
WASHINGTON – Jonathan Soros thinks a push by the New York Legislature to tighten the state's campaign-finance laws could give the issue national momentum if it's successful.
And the Harvard-educated lawyer, son of billionaire hedge-fund investor George Soros, has a game plan to make it happen.
The super PAC that Soros co-founded in April last year, Friends of Democracy, plans to double the number of House races — from eight in 2012 to 16 in 2014 — in which it will spend money backing candidates who support stricter campaign-finance laws. And it hopes to double the amount it raises, from $2.5 million last year to $5 million for the 2014 elections.
Soros, along with other groups pushing for more transparency and integrity in government, is spending money on advertising and advocacy in New York, where he's supporting Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo's ramped-up efforts to enact legislation that would provide public matching funds for campaign contributions from small donors.

3 men got charged with making fake credit and debit cards to use other people's money to buy gas. The officials found $340,000 on 400 forged credit cards in their hotel rooms. It is so easy to get away with credit card forging especially if you are just buying gas. It looks like a card swipe. Nothing to really be worried about.

A 13 year old entrepreneur has an idea that is being looked at by a man by the name of Mark Hagar. Her idea is one in the kitchen; to bake cupcakes inside of ice cream cones. There is a stand that was developed to hold the ice cream cones straight up in the oven, so that they would not fall over, and the cup cakes would bake evenly. After her idea was ignited after a baking event at her local middle school, Annabel and her father sought out financial aid from Mark Hagar. So far they have raised $400 out of $2500 needed.

- Start saving early for retirement. The earlier you start, the less amount (percentage wise) of your salary you have to save each year in order to live comfortably during retirement.
- Contribute to your company’s 401k if they match, else open up an IRA. Always max these accounts out every year to the cap. Did I mention start early? Like right now?
- Aim for 10-15% of your income going to retirement.
- Only put 3-6 months worth of living expenses in your bank’s savings account, the interest rate is usually abysmal and probably does not even beat inflation. Use it as an emergency fund for when you need money ASAP.
- For the rest of your money, put them in bonds and mutual funds. Follow the bonds/mutual funds allocation formula in the “Investing” section above.
- Retire like a boss.
