Admissions officers at some of the nation's most selective colleges, who are now sending acceptance letters for their fall freshman classes, say they barely look at an applicant's GPA.

To help jump start your college savings, here are a few tips from Kantrowitz, who is also publisher of the financial aid information site FinAid.org:
- Make savings automatic, so you don't have to think to save.
- Increase the amount you save each year. You will quickly get used to not having the money in your checking account.
- Whenever you get a windfall, such as a big income tax refund or inheritance, contribute all or part of it to the college savings plan.
- When expenses change, resulting in some savings, devote the savings to college. "When your child no longer needs diapers or daycare, for example, redirect the savings to their college fund," Kantrowitz says.
- Use a rebating program, like Upromise, to help build your 529 plan faster.
- Finally, get grandparents and other relatives involved. Have them contribute to your children's 529 plans instead of giving gifts on birthdays and holidays.

The readers' responses to an article show how much they really read through the article and researched their information. The first guy makes a point by saying that the average student has up to $26500 in student loans that need to be paid back after school and that education lasts a lifetime whereas a person can buy a car that costs the same only lasts about three years. I think that idea is completely true but one must consider what the loans are going to do to your financial well being.

She has already graduated high school and she has been working with stocks since she was 8 years old. She seems to be racking up really good returns too, like a 30.4% gain in 2012, and not to mention, she is doing this all with her own money. When just 8 years old, she started reading finance books around the house. Now she just wants to help teach people about finances. I think this girl is inspiring because some people struggle with stocks and understanding them, but she shows people that you don't have to be a certain age to understand stocks and finances.

How Much Do You Pay for College?
http://chronicle.com/article/How-Much-Do-You-Pay-for/137043/
Over the past decade and a half, I've given talks on dozens of college campuses about the need to increase socioeconomic diversity, but never before had I witnessed what I observed during a recent speech at Middlebury College.
Before introducing me, students from the sponsoring organization, Money at Midd, began the forum by publicly announcing their names and how much they and their families paid each year in tuition and fees. The first student, Samuel Koplinka-Loehr, said that his family paid about $18,000, and that he added $3,000 from his job. He passed the microphone to the next student, who said his family paid the full $56,000 comprehensive fee. A young woman said that her family could not afford to pay anything, but that she worked to pay $1,200 toward college costs.

This article is about students who want to go to college. It encourages them to visit college campuses before actually deciding on one. There are six major questions that you should ask when you visit, these help you to narrow down your choices. This article has great tips for students who want to apply to college in the near future.
Question 1: What percentage of students graduate in 4 years?
A 5th year of college can bust your budget if you aren’t prepared for it. And with cutbacks, many students are finding it difficult to secure all the required courses in order to graduate in 4 years. So, ask about graduation rates and access to courses.
Question 2: What percentage of students return for sophomore year? Junior year?
This speaks to how happy students are with the college and also the support that they are given to succeed. If fewer than 80% of students return for sophomore year, it raises a red flag that you should dig deeper to understand why.
Question 3: Does the college offer merit aid, and what factors are considered when determining merit?
Many elite universities only offer need based aid. Those that do offer merit aid may base it on grades, SAT/ACT scores, leadership roles, talent, etc. Also ask what the average award is and understand how you will be evaluated and how much you are likely to receive.
Question 4: How easy is it to transfer colleges within the university?
At medium to large universities, it can be nearly impossible to transfer from the College of Arts & Sciences to the College of Business or Engineering. So, you need to know what you want to study when you apply. At smaller liberal arts colleges, this is not usually an issue.
Question 5: What percentage of students who start in pre-med, finish in pre-med?
Colleges will often brag about the percent of students who are accepted to medical school, but if half are weeded out before they apply, that doesn’t bode well for you. You can also ask similar questions about the engineering or business schools, if that is your area of interest.
Question 6: What support are students given to secure internships?
Many colleges tout great internship programs, especially in a down economy. However, few have open and active positions listed in their career/internship office that need to be filled. In many cases, you are really on your own to find internships, get them approved and secure credits. Understanding where the college has relationships and active openings is critical. If all the opportunities are in engineering and you plan to be a journalism major, that isn’t going to help you much.
Campus visits can be overwhelming, but leaving without all the information is a mistake that can cost you dearly. So, take the time to uncover the real story behind the pretty presentation and marketing materials. You will make better decisions academically and financially if you know all the facts.

Managing a finite amount of money
How to make change
The bank always has more money than you do
Paying rent is inevitable
Mismanagement of your money can lead to excessive mortgages and ultimately bankruptcy
It’s hard to avoid the tax man
Some financial deals can improve your immediate situation but harm you in the long run. (Note: never let me get Boardwalk and Park Place, no matter how sweet I make the deal sound.)

But that teaches them that their parents will just give them the money rather than earning it. This article give good tips on how to teach your kids ways to save money when going out. It is a good lesson that way kids aren't always relying on their parents but have a sense of self direction.
-Look for deals on Twitter, Groupon and other coupon outlets. A lot of two-for-one discounts get communicated that way. Remember to "follow" favorite local restaurants to hear about their specials.
-Go in groups. Ask about group deals if going to dinner. While some restaurants may charge more for large groups, others offer incentives, such as free desserts. Or go in a group where everybody goes Dutch.
-Don't drink up. Keep an eye on the cost of liquid refreshments, which can be a big chunk of the bill. Also, some restaurants charge for water, so if in doubt, ask.
-Be creative: Look for no-cost or low-cost alternatives, such as attending a school play, a dance performance or sporting event where your activity fees have already covered the price of admission. Volunteer together - Idealist.org can connect you to volunteer groups in your area.
-Shop for bargains. If buying flowers, for example, many grocery stores and florists offer weekend specials - 3 bunches for $9. And there are no fees for delivery.

Staying Private on the New Facebook

I think that this article was very resourceful and helped me see exactly what not to do on Facebook.

Staying Private on the New Facebook
I think that the new privacy settings on Facebook don't let the user pick what they want to be seen in or what not to be seen in. Facebook is a great way to communicate with friends and relatives, but the privacy settings aren't really user friendly anymore. Sometimes Facebook even changes your setting after a period of time. I think that the article gives great information and "How-to" steps to help make your profile more private.

I feel that your privacy on facebook is very important. It is a form of protection to turn your information to only be viewed by your friends or private.

Monopoly helps teach kids about personal finance
The popular board game monopoly helps kids learn more about personal finance than meets the eye. This article gives a pretty solid list about all the ways including; how to manage a finite amount of money, how to count change, and paying rent is inevitable. Most importantly, the iron token is out and the cat is in!

I feel like it's wrong of facebook to be giving out our information to companies and anyone who requests it. It is meant for friends, not the world. I personally have everything on private but a lot don't. I feel this issue should get more light and more attention since basically everyone now a days has a facebook. If everyone knew about such things they wouldn't have even signed up in the first place.
Staying Private on the New Facebook
Facebook is a personal vault that can contain photos of your firstborn, plans to bring down your government and, occasionally, a record of your indiscretions. It can be scoured by police officers, partners and would-be employers. It can be mined by marketers to show tailored advertisements. And now, with Facebook’s newfangled search tool, it can allow strangers, along with “friends” on Facebook, to discover who you are, what you like and where you go.
Facebook Privacy
I didn't know that you could change all those settings on Facebook privacy settings. It is terrible that we live in a world that we even have to be concerned with this stuff. Like a person seeing when we run, thats just creepy.
Staying Private on the New Facebook
I was actually really surprised to find out how unprivate facebook is. When I get home from school I will definitely be changing all of my facebook settings so that my profile is more private.

Facebook Privacy
I think that it is unfortunate that Facebook is not as safe as a social networking site, especially since it is as popular as it is. I think it should be more secure and that it is not as easily accessible by strangers and/or certain people that users may not want to view their page. I also feel like users should double check their privacy settings and make sure that it is at their desired level of protection.

This article is saying that Facebook is not private anymore. People from friends, family, employers can go on there and find out everything about you even if you have your profile locked. This is crazy to think that nothing you say or do on the internet is for you and only you. I don't recall someone ever being able to look at something that you have locked.

Response to "New Facebook"
Although we all like to stalk people on Facebook, I do think more privacy is needed. When I think of the dangerous people in the world and how Facebook can be used as a tool for them, it makes me uncomfortable. I would hope more people find the need to create more private accounts.
Facebook privcacy
I Never thought about the trackers Facebook had to make sure ads are tailored to us specifically. Overall I found this article really interesting and it made me wonder whats on my Facebook, especially since I have not been on in about a year.
